Memorial to Private George Ellis re-dedicated at St. James', Ince

Members of our congregation, the local community and further afield joined together to re-dedicate memorial to former villager who died at the 'Battle of Passchendaele' 100 years ago this August.

We were fortunate to have some fine weather this morning (Sunday 20th August) at a special service to re-dedicate the restored memorial in our churchyard to Private George Ellis who was born at Ince and died during the ‘Battle of Passchendaele’ on 15th August 1917, aged 23.

Our Vicar, the Revd Ruth Ackroyd, led the service which remembered all those who perished at Passchendaele and included a reading of the life and military service of Private Ellis, Siegfreid Sassoon’s poem ‘Memorial Tablet’ and an act of remembrance with the ‘Last Post’, silence and the placing of a wreath.

Here are a selection of photographs from the service and a reminder of the condition of the stone before we embarked on this project – quite a transformation we are sure you will agree.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so generously to our fundraising effort, for attending the service this morning and for making this a reflective but appropriate and moving occasion.
